The state of Irish Football

After the 5-2 drubbing of the Republic of Ireland by Cyprus the team needed to get something out of the game against the Czech Republic. They did, it finished 1-1. In typical Irish football fan style gone were the calls for resignations to be replaced by the Ole Ole brigade acting like we had actually won something. Such is the fickleness of Irish football fans, a little wallpaper of the gaping cracks and they are Read more

Rovers are back!

Great night [match report]. The team scoring in the last minute of the first half in match that wasn’t going your way is great. That the scorer was the same person who managed to send a last minute oppertunity out of the stadium on Friday made it even better. Poetic even! Second half Bohs got a penalty, which their experienced player/manager stepped up to take against a 20 year old Barry Murphy. And he saved Read more

Bring on the Boez!

Tonight the Hoops take on their old advisaries Bohemians in the third Round of the FAI Cup. Rovers are top of the first division, Bohs are a boring mid table in the premier. Only one of the Hoops players has had any experience of this fixture before; the one who has had this to say “I’ve been telling the lads they won’t experience another game like this in their careers”. On paper Bohs should win Read more

Managing console connections

The Patch System Test lab, like many other labs, has a mixture of different machines, some with different means of connecting up the serial console to them. The older Sun boxes have 25 pin connectors, some others have 9 pin serial connectors, and newer machines have RJ45 connectors. For the most part people will use some sort of terminal server for getting the consoles on these machines. To get the console you basically need to Read more

To the 40,000 of you at Lansdowne Rd. tonight

Perhaps you might consider watching some decent football from now on. The four minutes below is from Shamock Rovers first division match against Galway  a couple of weeks ago. The fans were louder than the 40,000 following the national side tonight. The football was a lot better too, the video coverage isn’t! The match wasn’t great but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as the national teams performance tonight. There are a few more Hoops Read more

Martin Turner

Tonight I noticed that one of my favourite cartoonists is syndicated online. Martin Turner does the daily cartoon for the Irish Times and usually has a politcal theme. I’ve resisted speaking about the current crisis in Israel and Lebanon on my blog. I think Martin captures what’s happening quite well in this cartoon from early on in the conflict: Trócaire ,an Irish overseas development agency, have been appealing for donations on Irish radio, they accept Read more

So if you’ve any money go up to the park

Last Saturday I took my first trip to Dublin Zoo in several years, and its improved vastly from my last visit. The animals have much more room to roam about than they had on my previous visits, and work is continuing to improve facilities further. A Zoo provides great photo opportunities. One of my favourite pictures of the day was of an animal that I hadn’t seen before, a Red Panda. This photo is almost Read more

James A. Van Allen

James A. Van Allen died yesterday age 91. Van Allen made the first great discovery of the space age, with his instruments on the very first american spacecraft, Explorer 1. The largest Earthly “object”, the Van Allen radiation belt, is named after him. http://history.nasa.gov/sputnik/vanallen.html It sad to see one of the last great space age pioneers passing on. Thanks Mapquest

I’ve been getting a bit lazy thanks to Google Earth. Just type in an address (works best in the US) and you have the coordinates. Plug the coords into the GPS and you are fine. I’m in the US at the moment and staying in a hotel I’ve not been in before. So I googled for it, got the address, added that to google earth… And turned my GPS on at Milbrae BART Station. The Read more
